On one of our trips over to set up our new home, we arrived at the house at the same time as our next-door neighbor arrived back at her house on her bike. She had been out shopping. She told us in Albanian to come to her house. We left the strollers and bags of goods at our gate and followed her to her oborr (garden a.k.a. yard). She proceeded to carry down chairs from her veranda to the table in her driveway. She opened her garage door, which I later noticed was actually det up as a kitchen, and got a stack of cushions from within. She grabbed some cold drinks and snacks for us to enjoy.
She was all smiles. She let us know that she has a sister that lives in NY. There wasn't much that I could understand, or say to her. I tried to express what I could with the little that I knew in Albanian ("Shqip" is actually what Albanians call their language. It's pronounced, "Shcheep." On that note, they call their country, "Shqiperia," which is still very interesting to me considering it sounds nothing like our English words for them and their country). I also employed Google translate on my phone. Thankfully one of her grown sons who speaks enough English came out and helped us understand one another for a while. One thing that I have learned to say is, "Burri im flet shqip më mirë se mua." (My husband speaks Albanian better than I do.) In other words, "Someday my husband will come and rescue me, telling you everything that I want to say!"
We saw her mace (mahtza), or cat. I tried my best to ask if she had any kittens. She seemed to be saying that she did, that she had three. A little while later, she was showing us around her yard. It was full of pots with flowers (lule- loolay) and strawberries. There they were, three precious little kittens hidden away under the plants.
She handed one off to Thatcher.
I think that she told us that we could take one.
Since then, she has had us over for similar visits. She has met Edward and he has rescued me several times from my lack of being able to communicate fully. She also had us do a video chat with her sister who is in Long Island, NY.
I am eagerly trying to get everything in order here at the house, so we ourselves can practice hospitality with the people that we have met, and hopefully some of you!!
